The world’s smallest dog is tinier than a popsicle stick

Earlier this month, the Guinness World Records declared a two-year-old chihuahua named Pearl as the world’s smallest dog. Pearl, who was born on September 1, 2020, measures 9.14 cm (3.59 in) in height and 12.7 cm (5.0 in) in length. This means she is shorter than a popsicle and almost the same length as a dollar note. She weighs just 553 g (1.22 lb).
It is interesting to note that Pearl is the relative of Miracle Milly, a chihuahua who previously held the world record for being the world’s smallest dog. Like Milly, Pearl too was just 28 grams at birth.
Pearl’s owner Vanesa Semler recently introduced Pearl on the Lo Show Dei Record, an Italian TV show. While interacting with Gerry Scotti, Semler said, “We’re blessed to have her and to have this unique opportunity to break our own record and share with the world this amazing news.”

To verify Pearl’s record, her height was measured three times at different intervals at the Crystal Creek Animal Hospital in Orlando. As per the Guinness World Records guidelines, the Pearl’s measurements were taken from the base of her front foot up to the top of the withers in a vertical line. What makes Pearl special is her calm temperament, which is unlike other chihuahuas.
In May last year, the Guinness World Records announced Zeus, a two-year-old American Great Dane, as the world’s tallest dog living (male). Zeus measures 3 feet 5.18 inches (1.046 metres) and lives with the Davis family in Bedford, a city in Texas, US. He was adopted by Brittany Davis when he was just eight weeks old.
